Wilson High School has launched a fundraiser to build a new 3,000-square-foot weight room — and it needs more than $225,000 to do so.

For the past 95 years, Wilson High’s athletic program has experienced great success, including having an Olympic presence in every summer games since 1956. It also boasts 449 Moore League championships, 67 CIF championships, two CIF state regional championships, four CIF state championships and two national championships, according to a recent press release.

For a Good Cause: Sowing Seeds of Change hosts Garden Chef cooking competition

Sowing Seeds of Change, a local nonprofit, recently hosted its inaugural Garden Chef Competition, during which five local chefs and students cooked up food to raise money for the group’s programming.

Sowing Seeds of Change works to provide foster youth and young adults with disabilities with agricultural education and skills to engage with the local food system through vocational training, youth entrepreneurship and leadership opportunities, according to its website.

MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center remains among the nation’s premier hospitals, according to the latest ranking by Newsweek.

For the fifth year in a row, the news publication has placed the Long Beach health care facility in the top 20% of hospitals in the country and the top 15% in the state because of the innovative treatments and care its medical teams provide to patients in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

For a Good Cause: Community beach cleanup takes place monthly in Belmont Shore

If you want to help clean up your local beaches, this is the monthly opportunity for you.

Justin Rudd, the local organizer and founder of the Community Action Team, hosts a 30-minute beach cleanup on the third Saturday of each month at Rosie’s Dog Beach, 1 Granada Ave., in Belmont Shore.

There are two sessions volunteers can attend on those days: 9:30-10 a.m. and 10-10:30 a.m.

This month’s cleanup will occur on Saturday, March 18 — rain or shine.

CSULB confirms original socially distanced ceremony plan will move forward

Long Beach State President Jane Close Conoley announced via email on Friday, Feb. 25 that the university would be moving forward with its original socially distanced commencement ceremony plan.

California State University Chancellor Joseph I. Castro resigned on Thursday, Feb. 17 amid claims of mishandling multiple sexual harassment allegations against a California State University, Fresno administrator.

Three CSULB seniors created the spring 2022 commencement petition for a 'traditional walk' at Angel Stadium

Over 6,800 Long Beach State students have signed the spring semester graduation petition calling for a traditional in-person commencement ceremony where graduates are able to walk across the main stage at the Angel Stadium.

Xiomara Santos, a fourth-year marketing major who graduated in December 2021 started this petition in order for Beach graduates to be properly recognized for their achievements during the CSULB commencement ceremony.

CSULB ASI Beach Pride Events confirms re-scheduled Week of Welcome event dates

Long Beach State’s Beach Pride Events moved the spring semester’s Week of Welcome (WoW) event to the end of February due to the campus’ late start for in-person instruction.

Originally, Week of Welcome (WoW) was postponed by Beach Pride Events after the university announced the temporary delay of in-person instruction until Monday, Feb. 7 due to the rise of COVID-19 omicron variant cases.

Kasey Schoen, Beach Pride Events’ program manager, said the original dates of WoW were scheduled from Jan.

Long Beach State’s Commencement Office announced on Thursday, Jan. 20 that the 2022 commencement ceremony will take place at the Angel Stadium of Anaheim from May 16 to May 18.

In order to participate in this year’s commencement ceremony, graduates must complete their graduation application by March 1 in order “for their name to be added to the Graduate Recognition Program and to receive future commencement correspondence,” the Commencement Team announced in an email.

Long Beach community petition for the removal of CSULB professor after acts of sexual misconduct, harassment at former job

Long Beach State students and alumni gathered over 600 signatures calling for the removal of part-time Chicano and Latinx studies professor, Julio Perez due to previous sexual misconduct allegations.

The petition’s organizers stated how discouraging it was to hear Perez “was placed inside a classroom as a professor with a position of power” despite his removal from Orange County Labor Federation (OCLF) four years ago.

At this time, Perez has not been charged with any crimes.
